In May 2015, we launched a brand new program for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers – 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten! We’ve partnered with Loutit District Library in Grand Haven for this ongoing program and together, we’ve registered nearly 500 children.
We’re celebrating our year anniversary with a Focus on Early Literacy Bonanza! Music Teacher Val Letenyei will be at the library on Tuesday, May 10 at 10:30am to teach a Kindermusik class for kids ages 3-5 and their caregivers. On Thursday, May 19 at 10am, Sarah Feaster will teach a fun and interactive sign language workshop for babies and toddlers ages 0-3 and their caregivers. Sign up for either class in our Calendar of Events. We’ll also be holding a Preschool Dance Party on Friday, May 20 at 10:30am for all our baby, toddler, and preschool aged friends and their caregivers. Bring your dancing shoes, and we’ll provide the tunes and props!
If you haven’t signed your child up yet, stop by the Youth Services desk at any time to register, get a log book to keep track of books read, and a tote bag to help keep books organized! For every 100 books read to your child on the way to 1,000, your child will get to choose a book to add to their home library. Children who reach the 1,000 book goal before starting kindergarten will join the library’s wall of fame!
Reading with children is the single most effective way to help children become proficient readers and prepare for academic success. Any child from birth until they start kindergarten is eligible to sign up.
Funding for this program was generously provided by the Mary Ann Sherwood Families and Children Fund and the Youth Fund of the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation.
