Learn the history of the steam locomotive, Pere Marquette 1225, with Kevin P. Keefe on Tuesday, May 2 at 7pm. Keefe’s book Twelve Twenty-Five: The Life and Times of a Steam Locomotive is a 2017 Michigan Notable Book and the recipient of the 2016 Historical Society of Michigan State History Award.
The 1225 is a World War II-era steam locomotive that was used to shuttle steel and wartime freight between Michigan cities and northern Indiana steel mills. After it was retired from service, the locomotive was sent for scrap, but it was rescued and sent to Michigan State University where it sat next to Spartan Stadium for several decades.
When Kevin Keefe attended MSU, he was a key figure in the efforts to restore 1225 back to working condition. The now-restored locomotive was featured in the 2004 movie, The Polar Express.
Twelve Twenty-Five tells these stories and more as it traces the exciting existence of a steam locomotive. Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing following the presentation.
