Teen Read Week is an annual celebration of reading for fun promoted by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) In keeping with this year’s theme, Get Away @ Your Library, the Spring Lake District Library will offer several opportunities for teens to have fun at the library during the week of October 18.
October is the perfect time to dream up a spooky tale. In celebration of Teen Read Week 2015, teens will have the opportunity to show off their storytelling skills. Teens can enter their original short ghost story of 500 words or less between October 1 and October 20. All participants will be entered for a chance to win a $30 gift card for the Grand Haven 9 movie theater. Entry forms will be available at the Youth Services desk in October.
Wednesday, October 21 will feature a special Teen’Scape event from 3:30-5 p.m. This monthly event for teens ages 10-18 features video games, crafts, food, and a chance to meet new friends. At the October Teen’Scape participants will also have the chance to customize pumpkins to take home.
For teens looking to get creative and learn a new skill, the Spring Lake District Library will offer a Video Workshop on Thursday, October 22 from 4-6:30 pm. In this hands-on class, teens ages 10-18 will learn video-making basics from start to finish, including composition, camera techniques, and editing. Pizza will be provided. Workshop attendance is limited to 12 participants and preregistration is required. To sign up, please stop by the youth services desk or call (616) 846-5770, ext. 134.
The celebration wraps up on Friday, October 23 with a Teen Movie event at 2 p.m. Teens ages 13 and up are invited to attend a free screening of Jurassic World. In this dinosaur thriller a new theme park is built on the original site of Jurassic Park. When the park’s biggest attraction — a new genetically modified breed of dinosaur – escapes, the heroes must find a way off the island before they’re eaten alive. Jurassic World is rated PG-13 and is 124 minutes long.
